On a quiet day during the pandemic, I took some time for myself and read "The Zen Strategy" by Harald Kümmel. The book's subtitle, "Mindfulness for Holistic Fitness," piqued my interest: firstly, because as a tennis-mad family, we're currently working hard on our physical fitness, and it was fascinating to see what else contributes to overall fitness. Secondly, mindfulness is a topic that can offer us all support in these uncertain times. The book truly captivated me that peaceful afternoon – I read it in one sitting and gleaned many useful and valuable tips that influence physical fitness training as well as the numerous other fitness areas covered within.
Do you experience aches and pains during a tennis match? Do you feel stiff and cramped right after a game or the day after, and your muscles just seem too short? As we age, we do tend to get a bit stiff. Age, and often prolonged sitting, leads to shortened muscles and tendons, and the fascia becomes restricted. For those over 40, mobility becomes increasingly important. We need to become more supple and flexible again. If we achieve this, we reap multiple benefits: we're more agile on the court, recover faster, and are less prone to injury. It
doesn't just sound good – it feels good too!
