All hotels featured on TennisTraveller have been recommended by TennisTraveller – this is very important to us and a major strength that TennisTraveller so unique. It's also crucial that I know most of the hotels personally and have already enjoyed tennis holidays there with friends or family. However, until recently, I hadn't even been to our only Swiss tennis hotel, the Hotel Hirschen Wildhaus . So I was all the more excited to get to know the hotel during a work meeting. And now, I'll take you all along virtually in my travel report to the Swiss Toggenburg region!
From Stuttgart, I was at the hotel in just 2 ½ hours. A stone's throw and a very pleasant drive. The last stretch up to the pass in Toggenburg was absolutely breathtaking. Once at the hotel, you have to take in the surroundings for a moment. I was lucky enough to see and admire the seven Churfirsten peaks, a mountain formation for which Toggenburg is famous, bathed in sunshine before the approaching thunderstorm. After a very friendly check-in, a stylish room awaited me at the hotel.
A tour of the hotel was planned with hotel manager Michael Müller. The hotel is already in its sixth generation of family ownership, making it the most traditional hotel in all of Switzerland. The main building features a blend of classic and modern areas. In my opinion, the combination is truly successful – it remains both incredibly cozy and elegant.
What I found particularly wonderful was the relatively new chalet located right next to the hotel, where I had the pleasure of interviewing Michael. The chalet regularly hosts events, concerts, and themed evenings, such as a typical Swiss cheese fondue dinner. It's incredibly cozy yet furnished in a very modern, loft-like style.
The kitchen also deserves high praise. At the Hirschen, you'll find traditional and simple Swiss dishes, a wide selection of steaks from local Toggenburg beef, and internationally inspired dishes, including Asian cuisine. Wine lovers will be delighted by the vast selection and the chef's personal expertise.
There wasn't much going on at the hotel in the evenings, as the bar was closed during the week due to the still-valid Covid regulations. A shame, really, because the bar is beautifully designed and definitely promises some great evenings out!
The next morning, a very friendly breakfast attendant and a small but delicious buffet awaited me in the spacious breakfast room with its large panoramic windows. Anything not on offer could be ordered upon request, such as egg dishes, fruit platters, etc. A good and very practical feature. The enormous cheese buffet was absolutely fantastic – you don't see something like that every day.
After breakfast, we went straight to the tennis center, which is just a 5-minute drive from the hotel in Unterwasser. Due to the bad weather, we were welcomed by Kurt Wiederkehr, founder of the European Tennis Academy, in the beautiful indoor tennis facility. A definite advantage of this location is that it allows for year-round play and training. In the summer, when the weather is nice, of course, the three clay courts are available outdoors.
Yes, I would have loved to stay longer and explore the surroundings in the nicer weather. This tennis destination isn't just ideal for a pure tennis holiday in the mountains. In winter, you can also enjoy fantastic skiing or cross-country skiing. In summer, your bike is ready and waiting. Or you can lace up your hiking boots and head out into nature. Or you can combine your tennis holiday with a few rounds on the golf course. Plenty of options, a beautiful hotel, very friendly hosts, and a refreshingly welcoming service team. As is not unusual for Switzerland, however, everything comes at a premium price. If the spa area is renovated and a brand new outdoor pool is built, then this hotel will definitely see me again.
