On a quiet day during the pandemic, I took some time for myself and read "The Zen Strategy" by Harald Kümmel. The book's subtitle, "Mindfulness for Holistic Fitness," piqued my interest: firstly, because as a tennis-mad family, we're currently working hard on our physical fitness, and it was fascinating to see what else contributes to overall fitness. Secondly, mindfulness is a topic that can offer us all support in these uncertain times. The book truly captivated me that peaceful afternoon – I read it in one sitting and gleaned many useful and valuable tips that influence physical fitness training as well as the numerous other fitness areas covered within.
Do you experience aches and pains during a tennis match? Do you feel stiff and cramped right after a game or the day after, and your muscles just seem too short? As we age, we do tend to get a bit stiff. Age, and often prolonged sitting, leads to shortened muscles and tendons, and the fascia becomes restricted. For those over 40, mobility becomes increasingly important. We need to become more supple and flexible again. If we achieve this, we reap multiple benefits: we're more agile on the court, recover faster, and are less prone to injury. It
doesn't just sound good – it feels good too!
Anyone who's been playing tennis for a while knows the feeling: you're just a step or two too late to the ball more and more often. Your acceleration feels more like slow motion. Balls you used to easily hit now bounce twice. But let's be honest: who actually trains their speed off the court? That's why, as part of our "Over 40s Fitness Specials," some tips and exercises on the topic of "speed" . Because there's no doubt that speed can be effectively trained "as you get older"—we just have to do it. In moderation, with a plan, and according to a system. So let's get started and turn that slowpoke into Speedy Gonzales!
Strength training is important for all tennis players, regardless of age – that goes without saying. But for tennis players over 40, the topic of strength becomes absolutely crucial . Why? Because muscle mass decreases with age, unless you do anything to maintain it. In our "Over 40s Fitness Special, " we want to provide you with some strength workouts to help you build a solid foundation of strength. No gym or fancy equipment required. All you really need is your body, your willpower, and a bit of endurance – and then you'll start seeing results.
This year, we're once again presenting you with a pre-season fitness special . And it's a very special one for tennis's "best agers," the "over 40s ." Why? Because there are a number of reasons why a specific fitness program for the "older" generation is necessary. And because we know from our own experience that as we age, our bodies don't always function as we'd like. While things often go quite well on the tennis court during training or matches, you might experience aches and pains in your back for days afterward. Your already damaged and arthritic knee hurts, and annoying strains or inflammations occur much more quickly and frequently. Together with the Australian fitness "gurus" Nathan and Giselle Martin, we'll be presenting you with a fitness program over the next few weeks that will primarily help you get in shape for the upcoming clay court season. And of course, the program is also ideal for staying fit during the current coronavirus crisis and creating a solid foundation for when it's over.
