I was away for a short while: my travel report from the ROBINSON Club Cala Serena in Mallorca
TennisTraveller to Mallorca in November ROBINSON Club Cala Serena ? Absolutely fantastic, especially when you have four days of wonderful weather like I did. What's more, Cala Serena is open year-round and, with its two indoor tennis courts, is the perfect destination for us all year. More on that below.
From Stuttgart, it was a quick two-hour drive to Palma de Mallorca , then a little over half an hour southeast in the rental car to Cala d'Or, where the ROBINSON Club is located. A very warm welcome awaited us at reception, complete with a welcome drink. In our lovely room, we were greeted by a personal welcome note from the club manager, Tina, and her deputy, Peggy, along with chilled sparkling wine. Now that's how you feel welcome!
Speaking of club owner Tina Grünold. Why not listen to my interview with her first? We recorded it on the beautiful rooftop terrace of the main bar – complete with the sound of the sea!
Tina is a real powerhouse and always has an open ear for guests and staff! In general, there was a very warm and welcoming atmosphere – not forced, but genuine and simply lovely.
All accommodation units are casually scattered across the grounds, three stories high, and decorated in a Mediterranean style, as is the room furnishing. The club grounds are quite hilly, meaning you do walk up and down a bit. First, we went on an initial exploration, interrupted by lunch – in typical Club ROBINSON fashion.
The gardens are simply beautiful and expansive. Palm trees, bird of prey flowers – everything is lush and blooming, and meticulously maintained. As a photography enthusiast, I constantly discover new subjects to photograph. The central piazza at the club is delightful and surely THE place to be on balmy summer nights – unfortunately, it was a bit too chilly for that this evening.
Perfect starting point for (tennis) exploration tours on the island
After my initial exploration, I drove my rental car to Manacor to visit the Rafa Nadal Academy, which is easily reachable in half an hour. However, I was quite disappointed, as the facility was practically empty on Saturday afternoon at 5 pm. Instead of a vibrant tennis scene, there were only a few recreational players hitting a few balls. Nevertheless, the entire complex is impressive – it truly lacks nothing – except for the lack of people, but perhaps I was just unlucky.
Over the next two days, we were able to take a day trip from the club along the east coast and another trip towards Santa Ponsa, including a visit to the venue of the Mallorca Open. Since there was relatively little going on on the island, all destinations were easily and quickly accessible.
Indulgence made easy - in a very stylish and cozy atmosphere
In the evenings, dinner was served at the club from 7:30 pm onwards – a very wide selection, and I particularly enjoyed the Wellfit menu. There was always something special there, while the other stations often offered the familiar classics – but always good and tasty. I was also impressed by the clever layout of the different dining areas , which kept the noise level and the general hustle and bustle to a minimum.
Besides the main restaurant, there are two other specialty restaurants, . Unfortunately, I couldn't get a table at the tapas restaurant, as it was fully booked three days in advance. A real shame... So, if you're booking a short trip and want to eat there, it's best to reserve from home – you can even do this online via the ROBINSON app.
The breakfast also deserves praise – many different freshly squeezed juices and smoothies, a daily changing selection of muesli, and much more. I found the "lunch station" particularly convenient, where you can prepare and pack your own sandwiches for a day trip.
The bar was always very busy in the evenings – it's quite cozy, and thanks to the patio heaters, we could even sit outside for quite a while. However, drinks at the bar aren't included in the price (at least not with our booking). A large beer for €5 isn't exactly a bargain, but it didn't taste any less good for it.
Cala Serena - the "flagship" of ROBINSON in terms of tennis
Now for the most important part – the tennis facility, located opposite the club, with a total of 12 quartz clay courts . Two of the courts are covered by an air-supported dome – truly unusual for Mallorca, but perfect in rainy weather!
The tennis bar sits majestically in the heart of the complex, boasting a magnificent terrace overlooking many of the courts, where you can enjoy a fresh coffee or a refreshing drink. The new operator of the tennis facility is Tony Soysal, a long-time ROBINSON employee and a true tennis fanatic in the best possible way. If you'd like to learn more about Tony and his brother Erkan, who also manages the tennis center at the ROBINSON Club Jandia Playa in Fuerteventura, simply read my blog post about it.
The rest of the sports on offer is truly enormous , with dozens of different courses, introductory golf lessons, etc. For joggers and walkers, there are various routes starting from the club – very nice, although they're no longer signposted after about 100 meters... But I finished my jog without getting lost!
Especially in November or during the rest of the winter months, the spa and wellness area is perfect for relaxation. The glass-enclosed panoramic sauna truly impressed me. Watching the sunset from the sauna – simply wonderful! And afterwards, snuggled up on the rooftop terrace and enjoying the sound of the sea! That's pure luxury!
Finally, a few more words about the sea
The club is located on the very small Cala d'Or , which, like any Spanish beach, is generally public. While there is a small "beach area" within the club grounds, you can also access the open sea via a ladder. There are plenty of sun loungers down in the cove and throughout the pine trees. In my opinion, this beach isn't ideal for families with young children. But there's always the lovely pool to use as an alternative.
My personal conclusion
The ROBINSON Club Cala Serena is a truly beautiful tennis spot with a fantastic atmosphere . And thanks to the short (and usually very affordable) flight, it's also a great destination for a short break during the autumn and winter months . Plus, you can play tennis here all year round! Perfect, right?
