Start of the intensive tennis camp at the Ljubicic Tennis Academy on Lošinj - our first camp diary entry
After arriving here on the beautiful island of Lošinj last Saturday and enjoying two days of vacation and settling in at our camp hotel, the Punta Vitality Hotel 's intensive camp at the Ljubicic Tennis Academy started today at 8 a.m. Excited and full of motivation, he headed towards the fitness room with his tennis gear packed. And let me tell you, the first day of camp, with perfect tennis weather, was quite an experience.
The early bird gets fit
Yesterday, Tom was added to the Academy's WhatsApp training group, so the schedule and group assignments for today were clear in advance. The meeting point was the Ljubicic Tennis Academy's gym, located in the Punta Vitality Hotel . An hour of fitness was on the agenda. The Academy has a separate gym within the already excellently equipped fitness area of the Punta Vitality Hotel. A significant difference is immediately apparent: while the hotel's fitness area is packed with cardio and strength training equipment, the Ljubicic Tennis Academy's space is much more streamlined. Weights, plenty of resistance bands, cable machines, and everything else needed for an effective bodyweight workout are all there. Nothing is missing. Fitness coach Dan led the group.
After the fitness session, it was time to head out onto the court. Two players and one coach per court. The group was very international, consisting of young people who train regularly at the academy and players who come for a few days or, like Tom, for a whole week. Tom was on the court with an Australian player, where Coach Mario led them through various rhythm drills. Overall, the atmosphere on all the courts was very calm. Clear, concise instructions from the coaches, no shouting, everything very precise and focused.
The second training session in the afternoon will see the teams really push themselves
After the first tennis session, there was a break until 2:30 p.m. Then it was back to the courts for a 30-minute warm-up on the track and field tartan track right on the premises. Afterwards, it was time for the second tennis session. Same tennis coach, but a different tennis partner. Melos from Sweden was the training partner. First, there were rhythm drills with forehands, backhands, and volleys. Then serves, followed by a sparring session of one set. To finish the session, quick points were practiced without serving, but with the coach throwing the ball.
From the tennis court, it was back to the gym for a 30-minute workout. Here, a few strength and stretching exercises were performed. Tom's session ended at 5 p.m. Many of the academy players still have a physiotherapy session.
Tom's Highlights of the Day
- ON COURT: Stay calm - don't jump around so much during the shot.
- IN GYM : Cool equipment and varied exercises, especially in the second session!
First glimpse behind the scenes of the Ljubicic Tennis Academy
This morning I had the opportunity to speak with Thea, the hospitality manager of the Ljubicic Tennis Academy. She explained that currently 15 players from Australia, South Africa, Sweden, and Croatia are training regularly at the academy. This week, an additional 10 players are staying at the academy for a few days or weeks at a time and are being integrated into the intensive training program. The academy's philosophy is to prioritize quality over quantity, especially when it comes to developing young talent. Therefore, the number of permanent academy players is not expected to increase.
