Don't jump and move! Two instructions that were repeated again and again on day three of the intensive camp at the Ljubicic Tennis Academy in Veli Lošinj. Coach Darko had identified two areas for improvement in Tom's game: less jumping while hitting and less constant movement. This was the focus of work today – with success! On Wednesdays, the Academy only trains in the mornings, so after the morning fitness session and 1.5 hours of tennis, the day was over. Wednesday afternoons are for recovery, giving us time to explore the beautiful island. Among other places, we visited Mali Lošinj , which is located on the opposite side of the island. You can read about today's sporting and tourist activities in part three of our camp diary.
Today's schedule was manageable: the camp day started at 8 a.m. in the gym with an hour of fitness. Besides stretching exercises, there was another circuit with various stabilization and strengthening exercises. It's great that there are always new exercises; it never gets boring!
On the tennis court, Tom and his training partner Melos were greeted by Coach Darko. The first order of business was practicing serves, with a particular focus on refining the ball toss. Afterwards, they practiced rhythm drills from the baseline. "Don't jump !" Darko repeatedly reminded Tom that he shouldn't jump when hitting the ball, but rather stay on the ground. This helps him maintain better balance and control. Combined with the encouragement of "Move!", the first signs of progress are becoming visible. The simple yet targeted instructions are paying off, even if their legs and minds were noticeably tired. Nevertheless, all the kids gave it their all on every court.
After the rhythm drills, the two boys played a set. In addition to the instructions mentioned above, individual plays were analyzed. The coaches focused primarily on the "correct" game strategy. Any mistake made on the last, but correctly "thought-out" ball was quickly dismissed.
At 11 a.m., we set off with the family for Mali Lošinj , the "big" sister of Veli Lošinj, where, amusingly, Mali means small and Veli means large. We strolled along the waterfront promenade by the beautifully situated harbor and treated ourselves to a delicious lunch at one of the many restaurants. While we were eating, the local fishing boat came by and unloaded fresh fish: a huge tuna, scorpionfish, eel, mackerel, and much more were unloaded into nets and crates. Fascinating!
After that, we drove around some of the smaller bays, where there are not only more beautiful hotels, but also two tennis facilities. Lošinj is a true paradise for us TennisTraveller !
Before dinner, we'll enjoy the fantastic relaxation facilities at our Camp Hotel Punta Vitality . So, let's head to the sauna and the indoor pool!
