When we woke up this morning, the sun was shining after the continuous rain overnight. Unfortunately, our joy was short-lived, as a thunderstorm hit during our warm-up, quickly flooding all the courts. Unusual for this time of year, but no reason to take a break at the Ljubicic Tennis Academy . As planned, after the first hour of fitness, we headed to the four indoor hard courts for tennis training. Find out what happened on the fifth and final day of camp, and how the rest of the family spent their time at and around the Vitality Hotel Punta , in the fifth and final installment of our Camp Diary.
The morning session focused heavily on endurance and precision of the groundstrokes. Coaches Darko and Mario worked with three players: Tom, Aston, and Vallabhadas. This coach-to-player ratio is something I haven't seen very often, but it proved highly effective! The focus was on rhythm drills from the baseline. Each player had 10 minutes to hit the two cones positioned on the opposite side of the court, one on the forehand side and one on the backhand side. The target was eight hits. Unfortunately, the drill didn't go quite as Coach Darko had envisioned. He raised his voice to encourage the boys to be more precise and energetic. The different ball bounce meant their already tired legs were sometimes simply too slow. However, thanks to the positive encouragement and constant instruction from the two coaches, the boys improved steadily. A few successful hits on the cones could finally be heard.
Jan and I played for an hour and a half in the hall over lunchtime. It was Jan's first time playing on a hard court, and he was thrilled. We did have a bit more trouble at first with the ball bouncing, which was quite different from sand, but we got the hang of it fairly quickly. Matthias used the time for his shoulder rehabilitation in the excellently equipped gym.
After a 2.5-hour lunch break, Tom continued his training session in the hall despite the changeable weather. First, a group warm-up, followed by stroke practice, and finally, a coached match training session. The last training session consisted of an hour of fitness. As always, it was very varied and a perfect balance of endurance, strength, and stretching.
Saturday is usually a normal training day at the Academy. However, we'll be leaving very early tomorrow for home, so the camp ends today for Tom. But let me say this upfront: it's been five fantastic days of training here at the Ljubicic Tennis Academy that we won't soon forget. And Tom is taking home tons of tips! A more detailed summary will follow after we get back home.
Now we'll enjoy a relaxing end to our last evening at the hotel. The packed lunch for tomorrow morning has already been ordered – a great solution for all those departing early.
