Fitness is essential for us tennis players - so that for you it's always "Game, Set & Travel"
One thing we TennisTraveller have in common is our love and passion for tennis. To pursue this passion with full enthusiasm and joy on our tennis trips, we need to stay fit. And since many of you will likely be attending a tennis camp over Easter, it's high time to start working on your fitness. Over the next few weeks, we'll be giving you some suggestions on how to improve your speed, agility, strength, and endurance. So get off the couch and into training!
Take care of your fitness and make it a team or family project
As you may know, we're a tennis family through and through. And since some of us parents have known the importance of fitness training since our own youth, fitness plays a significant role in our lives, alongside training on the court. This is especially true because we have three tennis-playing kids who play a lot. So we motivate each other to get and keep our bodies in shape throughout the year. And it works (most of the time) quite well, even for us "old folks" – although there's always room for improvement.
Tennis is also very complex in terms of fitness, as many things need to be trained simultaneously or at a comparable intensity. So, how and when do I train what? It's often tempting to take a one-dimensional approach and, for example, "only" do strength exercises. And in doing so, you forget to keep your body flexible or optimize your footwork. Of course, you can't and shouldn't train everything at once. That's why it's so important to have a good training plan – whether you're an ambitious tournament player or a recreational player. And this plan should, of course, fit into your tournament schedule.
Can fitness videos lead to success?
I came across Nathan and Giselle Martin and their tennis fitness website, www.tennisfitness.com . After watching some really good videos, I took a closer look at their site. The Australian couple has already worked with many well-known tennis players, such as Sam Stosur, Svetlana Kuzentsova, Lleyton Hewitt, Jennifer Capriati, and many more, in the field of fitness. Today, they also focus on working with juniors and have holistic video training programs for various goals and age groups .
So I bought the Junior Program for $89 and was curious to see what it entailed. Like all the other programs, the whole concept is initially designed for 12 weeks, although 6-week programs are also possible. For example, there are special short programs for improving speed or strength.
various training plans are very important and excellent; they are designed according to the principles of periodization and simply provide a roadmap for how, with what intensity and frequency, the different training areas should be trained.
All training modules are described in detail in a video and in text. Small extras like a downloadable training plan, a training diary, stretching exercises, etc., are included. If you have any questions, you can ask them directly via the online platform or in a private Facebook group – responses are incredibly fast (but everything is in English). The platform offers are available to you for 12 months.
For anyone who already has some fitness experience or wants to complete the program with their team and coach, I can wholeheartedly recommend it. The video courses are more than worth their (small) price. You practically don't need any equipment. What's absolutely essential, however, is some self-discipline and a large dose of motivation! But the clay court season is waiting for you – so let's go!
