Nicolas began playing tennis at the age of six and was quickly recognized as a talent. In 1995, he won the Australian Open and US Open junior Grand Slam tournaments and also reached the semifinals of the French Open in Paris and the final of the Wimbledon junior competition. He broke into the world's elite in 1999 when he participated in four finals on the professional tour, winning two of them, thus entering the top ten in the world rankings for the first time. Nicolas's greatest achievement in his tennis career was winning the silver medal in doubles at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. He has also won nine tournaments on the ATP World Tour. He is among the five most successful German tennis players of the Open Era. Today, he is an official ROBINSON brand ambassador and tennis expert. He has also launched his own collection under the label NK, featuring the KIWI logo. In addition, he is a brand ambassador for Wilson and an advisor and player at the tennis club SCC Berlin Charlottenburg 1911
