With KING RICHARD, Will Smith returns to the big-screen drama genre after his successes in THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS and ALI. Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green (Monsters and Men), he not only stars as Richard Williams in KING RICHARD but also serves as a producer through his company Westbrook. Saniyya Sidney (Hidden Figures) plays Venus Williams, and Demi Singleton (Godfather of Harlem) portrays her younger sister, Serena. Aunjanue Ellis (If Beale Street Could Talk) appears as Williams' wife and the girls' mother. Tony Goldwyn (Divergent) portrays their first coach, Paul Cohen. Jon Bernthal (Ford v Ferrari) plays the legendary tennis coach Rick Macci. The screenplay is by Zach Baylin and is based on Richard Williams' autobiography, Black and White.
For his performance in KING RICHARD, Will Smith received, among other awards, the Screen Actors Guild Award, the Golden Globe Award, and the Academy Award for Best Actor. The film itself received six Oscar nominations.
KING RICHARD was produced by Tim White and Trevor White of Star Thrower Entertainment and Will Smith with his company Westbrook. Isha Price, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith, Adam Merims, Lynn Harris, Allan Mandelbaum, Jon Mone, and Peter Dodd serve as executive producers. The creative team behind the scenes also includes Academy Award-winning cinematographer Robert Elswit (There Will Be Blood), production designers Wynn Thomas (Hidden Figures) and William Arnold (The Hate U Give), Academy Award-nominated editor Pamela Martin (The Fighter), and two-time Academy Award-nominated costume designer Sharen Davis (Dreamgirls, Ray). The score is by Academy Award-nominated composer Kris Bowers.
