Markus, please briefly introduce yourself to our community
Markus Polessnig, 42 years old, married with two children, former professional tennis player (ATP 526), has been with Carinthia Tourism for over 10 years, heads the Sales Promotion, Information Service, Event Marketing and Sports Camps department, and is responsible for golf and tennis. Hobbies: surprisingly, golf and tennis.
How long have you been playing golf and how did you get into golf?
I took my golf course qualification course 25 years ago on holiday, and I've been playing more regularly for the last 10 years, as often as time allows alongside work and family, so rarely 😊.
As a former professional tennis player and very good golfer, you are in a very good position to judge this: what are the special appeals and challenges of golf compared to tennis?
In golf, you're almost entirely responsible for yourself; no opponent influences your game – just like in tennis. External factors like wind, bad lies, or bad bounces exist in both tennis and golf. I find the stress factor lower in golf because I don't have a direct opponent or have to fend off a break, set, or match point. Golf has a relaxing effect on me, unless I miss a short putt; that's infuriating, but everyone's been there.

Markus Polessnig,
Carinthia Tourism, passionate tennis and golf player
Why do you think tennis and golf are a great combination for a holiday in Carinthia?
Thanks to the Mediterranean climate on the southern side of the Alps, the golf and tennis season in Carinthia starts very early. This year, the first golf courses opened as early as February, and the first tennis courts at the beginning of March. In addition, Carinthia offers a wide variety of outdoor activities such as cycling, hiking, and more. Here, it's not an either/or situation. Moreover, golf and tennis complement each other perfectly, and many guests enjoy playing both. Ten golf courses can be reached within 40 minutes by car, and Carinthia boasts around 600 tennis courts, some with breathtaking mountain and lake scenery. So what more could a golfer, tennis player, or holidaymaker ask for?
Where is your personal favorite golf course? What do you particularly like about it?
All the golf courses in Carinthia are very attractive; each one has a unique character and is worth playing at least once. Since I live in Klagenfurt, I most often find myself drawn to the Klagenfurt-Seltenheim Golf Club or the Carinthian Golf Club Dellach, where the view of Lake Wörthersee is, of course, breathtaking. If it gets too hot in the summer, I also enjoy playing on Carinthia's highest-altitude golf course, the Bad Kleinkirchheim Golf Club.
Your most memorable golfing experience on a Carinthian golf course was….
My first eagle, at the Carinthian Golf Club Dellach, hole 10, 80m chip in with the 2nd shot, will forever be remembered.
What's your personal favorite golfer's saying?
"Hit & Hope", which unfortunately often applies very well to my game.
Honestly: where does your heart beat faster today – at golf or at tennis?
So, the most difficult question is saved for last. I would put it this way: After a golf tournament, I find it easier to get out of bed the next day than after a tennis match. However, tennis will always remain my passion, and golf will contribute to my relaxation.
