From the regional special "Tennis holidays in Carinthia": Interview with Markus Polessnig from Carinthia Tourism
As part of our regional special "Tennis Holidays in Carinthia," Markus Polessnig today . Markus is a former professional tennis player, a native of Carinthia, and works for Carinthia Tourism, where he's responsible for golf and tennis. This makes Markus THE go-to person and expert for tennis holidays in Carinthia . He knows almost every tennis court in Carinthia from his active professional career. He's familiar with the many beautiful tennis hotels and all the wonderful leisure activities that Carinthia offers for your tennis holiday in southern Austria. And what could be better than working in the field and region you love?
Briefly introduce yourself and your role at Carinthia Tourism
My name is Markus Polessnig. I have been working for Carinthia Tourism for over 8 years. There, I am responsible for project management in the areas of golf and tennis.
Are you a native of Carinthia?
Yes, I was born and raised in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee.
What do you think is "typical" of a Carinthian?
Southern serenity and hospitality. Being approachable and open are also qualities that describe us well.
What are some "activity tips" away from the tennis court? What should a TennisTraveller "experience" in Carinthia?
Carinthia offers countless outdoor adventures. Since many tennis players are also skilled golfers, a round on one of our 12 golf courses is highly recommended. For hiking enthusiasts, the Alpe-Adria-Trail is a must, while those who prefer two-wheeled excursions shouldn't miss the Drau Cycle Path or the Carinthian Lakes Loop. But one thing is essential for all these activities: a refreshing dip in one of our 200 lakes.
Name 2-3 typical Carinthian delicacies that you absolutely must try during a tennis holiday in Carinthia
What I particularly appreciate about Carinthia is the genuine regionality evident in the kitchens of our chefs. My absolute favorite dish is Carinthian cheese noodles, but I also can't resist a crispy fried lake trout. Afterwards, a fluffy Carinthian Reindling (a sweet bread) with coffee, and the day is perfect. A tip: check out the new Slow Food Carinthia Guide 2022 , a culinary guide to fantastic taste experiences.
Where exactly is your absolute favorite spot in Carinthia and why do you find it so beautiful there?
Take a boat trip on one of the many lakes, enjoy the tranquility, and let your mind wander. The fantastic view from the Pyramidenkogel, incidentally the tallest wooden observation tower in the world, also gives you a wonderful feeling. The view across the entire Wörthersee is spectacular, as is the view of the surrounding mountains.
