On September 7, 2025, Jannik Sinner lost the US Open final to Carlos Alcaraz, surprisingly decisively. In the final victory ceremony, Jannik Sinner once again demonstrated true greatness. He showed why he is one of the new tennis giants. On the one hand, he demonstrated fairness and utmost respect for his opponent in this bitter defeat, and on the other, he was already mentally analyzing this defeat to see how he could improve himself and his game. The guy is ambitious to the core of his curly red hair, constantly striving to learn and improve. All of this, coupled with the down-to-earth nature instilled in him by his upbringing, makes him an exceptional athlete. Much of this can be understood even better after reading the book "Sinner - The Road to Global Stardom" by Enzo Anderloni, Michelangelo Dell'Edera, and Alessandro Mastroluca. The book is a biography of a special kind : it delves deeply into the South Tyrolean's sporting beginnings and accompanies him through various stages of his still young career. It also reveals what Nadal saw in him early on: "He has everything it takes to be one of the best players of the new generation." We'll introduce you to the book in more detail – enjoy!
The book begins in the South Tyrolean Dolomites, in the mountain village of Sexten, where little Jannik Sinner was born in 2001 and grew up as the son of a "completely normal" family. The completely normal, very loving, and trusting family environment is portrayed – something that has shaped and defined Jannik throughout his development to this day. He began playing tennis at just four years old with a tennis instructor friend. Skis were practically born, so young Jannik was constantly on the slopes in the winter. And very successfully, as the years would prove. At the age of seven, he became Italian champion in skiing.
The lively boy, the "little red devil," was always in action. Always on the move—no matter what, including football. The authors' analytical eye, which repeatedly provides very interesting insights and background information throughout the book, shows that this multidisciplinarity would prove to be of great importance for the development of Sinner's special abilities.
Sinner played his very first official tennis match in 2009, and from then on, his successful journey began. The book meticulously chronicles the further development of this exceptional talent, revealing the South Tyrolean's very special abilities at every stage, which were already evident as a child: a great desire to learn, to improve himself, a love of the game, a constant and hard worker, and a commitment to full concentration and determination in every training session.
In 2013, he finally decided to pursue tennis, and from then on, things really took off: national teams, regular training. With his move to the Piatti Tennis Academy in the summer of 2015 and the associated move away from his hometown, a new, important chapter began. His tournament participation increased significantly over the years, and his travel radius grew ever larger. But his advancement wasn't immediate and steady. However, the team around him pursued a plan, which Jannik followed with the utmost meticulousness and even coped well with defeats. Rather, he grew from them.
By reaching the No. 1 spot in the world rankings in 2024, the South Tyrolean reached the pinnacle of his career so far. The book touches on many tournament and Grand Slam victories, focusing increasingly on the "big picture," the Sinner system. The question of what exactly defines Jannik Sinner, why he became what he is today, is meticulously explored in the book.
There are some very interesting analytical sections that place particular emphasis on this and go into depth. The Italian tennis development system is also presented, and the reader at least begins to understand why there are so many Italian tennis stars besides Jannik Sinner. Last but not least, the end of the book contains all of the South Tyrolean's official tournament matches, from his first U10 match to his entry into the top 100 and victory at the 2019 Next Gen ATP Finals. Many of the names are very familiar to us tennis fans!
Not a "normal" biography as one might expect. Instead, the book delves quite deeply into the tennis world. Especially in Jannik Sinner's younger years, many coaches, officials, and companions are interviewed about Jannik, discussing their experiences with him and what they noticed. All of this is truly very interesting and helps you understand much of how top star Jannik Sinner performs today.
The authors' excellent tennis expertise immerses you deeply into the (Italian) tennis scene. Some may find the sometimes very detailed descriptions of individual tournaments, with their many names of opponents and coaches, a bit tiring. Personally, I found this very interesting, as it's often precisely this that's not covered. The details, the precise factors that contributed to winning a match, or, more importantly, to the overall development of Jannik Sinner as a player and person.
Therefore, an absolute reading recommendation for all who love a "deep dive" into the real tennis scene!
