Book review of "The ZEN Strategy" by Harald Kümmel: Mindfulness for holistic fitness
On a quiet day during the pandemic, I took some time for myself and read "The Zen Strategy" by Harald Kümmel. The book's subtitle, "Mindfulness for Holistic Fitness," piqued my interest: firstly, because as a tennis-mad family, we're currently working hard on our physical fitness, and it was fascinating to see what else contributes to overall fitness. Secondly, mindfulness is a topic that can offer us all support in these uncertain times. The book truly captivated me that peaceful afternoon – I read it in one sitting and gleaned many useful and valuable tips that influence physical fitness training as well as the numerous other fitness areas covered within.
Mindfulness and fitness – interpreted in a slightly different way
Mindfulness has become a rather hackneyed term. It's often treated in a very intellectual way. But in his book, Harald Kümmel succeeds in giving the concept of mindfulness a very down-to-earth, relatable, and practical character . The book's preface immediately draws the reader into the subject matter: the dialogue between the author, Harald Kümmel, and his friend, the extreme climber Thomas Huber of the legendary "Huberbuam," beautifully outlines the book's direction. With warmth, openness, and honesty, they speak concretely about the most important things that can contribute to a fulfilling life.
A brief introduction to the author : Harald Kümmel knows what he's writing about: as a multi-award-winning photographer, he has traveled extensively, experienced many cultures, and seen a great deal. Combined with his coaching work as a personal trainer and his lifelong pursuit of extreme experiences as a mountaineer, hang glider, and marathon runner, he understands why it's so important to consider fitness holistically and with mindfulness. This approach has enabled him to find happiness and contentment in himself and his life.
Clear chapter structure + great writing style + lots of beautiful photos = pure reading pleasure
Each chapter follows the same structure: Harald Kümmel always begins by telling a personal story to introduce the reader to the chapter's theme. He succeeds admirably. His relaxed writing style contributes to this, as do the wonderful photographs from around the world and the relevant quotes. I often found myself rereading these quotes several times; they are truly insightful.
Following the narrative, there's a brief scientific overview of the respective topic. The latest research findings and insights are presented, ensuring a solid understanding of the subject without overwhelming the reader with statistics or theoretical theories. In my opinion, it's all presented in just the right proportions. The third chapter then offers concrete tips and recommendations for action, both for everyday life and specifically for sports . And this section is relevant to all athletes, whether amateur or professional.
For Harald Kümmel, fitness goes far beyond physical fitness. He believes holistic fitness depends on nutrition, mental fitness, social environment, love, intuition, optimism, gratitude, and much more. If we succeed in mindfully addressing these various areas individually, the path to a fulfilling, self-determined life can open up. Especially, or perhaps even more so, in today's fast-paced and uncertain world.
Who is the book suitable for?
This book is suitable for anyone who enjoys reflecting on themselves and their life, and who is looking for new inspiration and impetus. Whether it's to adjust one's own direction and attitude, or to find some stability in uncertain times.
Especially for us athletes, the goal is often: always further, always faster, always better, sometimes to the point of obsessive self-optimization. And far too often, this leads to very one-dimensional action and thinking. Therefore, the Zen strategy is a valuable guide, showing us that besides physical fitness, there are so many other areas we should and can work on in order to ultimately find satisfaction.
And anyone who thinks this book is just another slightly esoteric mindfulness guide is mistaken. It's far too down-to-earth and practical for that!
