on a sunny plateau in the Passeier Valley in South Tyrol lies the four-star Hotel Sonnenalm , run by the Fink family for many, many years. While technically part of the small village of Sankt Martin, the hotel enjoys a wonderfully peaceful location just outside the village, bordering a forest. Guests can enjoy tennis and a variety of sporting activities directly from the hotel, including hiking and mountain biking. For those seeking a bit more excitement, Merano (15 minutes by car) and Bolzano (40 minutes) are easily accessible.
With 40 rooms, the Sonnenalm is very cozy – you have a sense of privacy. In the main building, most rooms are furnished in an alpine country style, quite spacious and comfortable. In contrast, some of the luxury suites, as well as the family suites in the Residence (a separate building about 30 meters away), are very luxurious and extremely chic. The family apartments (up to 120 square meters and for up to 7 people) are perfect for families with children who appreciate both plenty of space and the comforts of a hotel. A new outdoor children's park was added in 2020.
The Sonnenalm is one of three exclusive hotels owned by the Fink family, and thus part of the Andreus Resorts. The partner hotel, Andreus superlative establishment – we simply must mention it here – and even hosted the German national football team during their World Cup preparations. You'll find a world-class atmosphere there throughout. As a guest of the Sonnenalm, you can enjoy most of the sports and wellness activities free of charge. You'll just need to cover the short distance – about 20 minutes on foot or a 5-minute drive.
In just a few steps you'll reach the three clay courts , which are available free of charge two additional quartz clay courts at the 5-star partner hotel, Andreus . Tennis lessons are offered at the Sonnenalm or directly at the Andreus .
Next to the tennis courts is a padel court with a magnificent panoramic view. Another padel court and a pickleball court are located in the sports area built in 2025 near the Golf Lodge, not far from the Andreus Resort, and are available for your use. You can also set off directly from the Sonnenalm for a hike or a pleasant jog along the Passer River. If that's not enough, you can participate in the extensive sports program at the Andreus. There, you'll find everything from yoga and meditation to various fun sports like canyoning and rafting, mountain biking (with guided tours), and a 300m² sports area spread over three floors that will delight any fitness enthusiast. So there are no excuses!
Golfers can either tee off at the Passeier Golf Club (directly next to the partner hotel Andreus) or try their luck at the beautiful Dolomiti Golf Club Sarnonico. Those who prefer to seek their fortune on horseback will also find what they're looking for at the Sonnenalm: the Andreus has its own riding stable with school horses and an in-house riding school .
In 2020, a fantastic three-story wellness center added directly to the existing hotel. It features beautiful relaxation areas, a Finnish sauna with daily infusions, a herbal sauna, and an outdoor plunge pool. Also new is the 25-meter heated outdoor sports pool . After a tough tennis session, you can also unwind in the indoor pool at the Sonnenalm. The beauty and wellness center offers a variety of massages for all ages.
And when it comes to wellness, the same applies: for those who want something a bit bigger, more stylish, and more exclusive, the wellness area of the partner hotel Andreus is always open. But actually, everything a TennisTraveller could wish for is already available at the Sonnenalm.
At Hotel Sonnenalm, you book half-board . Your day starts perfectly with a gourmet breakfast. In the evening, a five-course menu is served in the panoramic restaurant. Homemade cake is also available in the afternoon.
Up the mountain – on foot, by bike or comfortably by gondola
From spring to autumn, there are countless opportunities to explore the stunning mountain scenery around the Sonnenalm. The hotel can offer excellent tips. The Passeier Valley itself is quite narrow, and the terrain rises steeply from the start. Even for city dwellers and shopaholics, Merano and Bolzano are just a stone's throw away. Don't miss the fantastic shops and the truly interesting weekly market. Wine connoisseurs can venture a little further towards Lake Caldaro, with its numerous wineries and vineyards. This corner of South Tyrol also offers a wealth of cultural attractions. Ask the hotel staff for recommendations.
