There's so much to discover in the surrounding area! That's why we can only mention a few here… We find it exciting to be able to explore Slovenia, Italy, and Croatia from Hotel Mirta. Trieste , the capital of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in northeastern Italy, is just a 30-minute drive away. This port city lies in the narrow strip of land between the Adriatic coast and the Karst plateau, bordering Slovenia. The Karst (Slovenian: Kras ) is a fascinating limestone plateau. The region gave its name to the phenomenon of "karst landscapes," as the erosive power of water has created particularly characteristic surface and subsurface formations in the porous rock. In Trieste's medieval old town, influences from Italy, Austria-Hungary, and Slovenia blend seamlessly. But there's also plenty to discover in Izola , a vibrant and cheerful Slovenian port town near Hotel Mirta . Numerous culinary festivals and events, as well as a wide range of sporting events such as the Istrian Marathon and the Izola Spring Cup Regatta, offer plenty of entertainment. A stroll through the narrow streets and a visit to the House of the Sea , which showcases the history of Izola and its fish processing industry, are highly recommended. Izola also boasts the remains of an important Roman port. The ancient structures, dating back to the 2nd century BC, were located in Simon Bay and belonged to a large Roman seaside villa, which can be visited in the San Simon Archaeological Park . Another worthwhile excursion is Tartini Square , the central square of the old town of the Slovenian coastal town of Piran , approximately 10 km from Hotel Mirta. It is situated on a picturesque promontory jutting into the Adriatic Sea. The Piran circular hiking trails also offer wonderful opportunities for walks.
