Arrive, enjoy the view of the lake and the wonderful mountain panorama of the Karawanken from the historic bathhouse and switch off IMMEDIATELY. That's exactly how I felt when I arrived Werzers Hotel Resort Pörtschach Let me take you to Lake Wörthersee in Carinthia in my Travel Scout report. A tennis trip to Austria that was active, varied, extremely relaxing and enjoyable.
So come along to the “front row, foot-free” - to the tennis hotel Werzers Hotel Resort Pörtschach.
This 4-star superior hotel is located directly on the shores of Lake Wörthersee. From the outside, the traditional tennis hotel appears somewhat boxy, but upon arriving at reception, you're greeted by a state-of-the-art, stylish ambiance. I was immediately impressed not only by the lobby, completely renovated in 2022 and furnished in a chic, stylish lounge atmosphere with its hotel bar, but also by the modern and spacious rooms. Although my room faced the "land side," I could see both the lake and the large Werzers Tennis Arena from my balcony. A view every TennisTraveller loves!
After a short stroll along the lakeside promenade, I was looking forward to a refreshing drink to kick off my tennis get-together. So, off I went to the historic bathhouse, which is even built over the lake. You can't get any closer to Lake Wörthersee. "Front row seats" is the hotel's motto, and that's especially true of the bathhouse itself, built in 1895 and now a listed historical monument. Upon arrival, I went straight to the restaurant located within the bathhouse, where you can enjoy à la carte dining with award-winning chefs in the evenings. During the day, they offer delicious lighter fare. With a cool drink and the already described breathtaking panoramic view, my tennis break got off to a perfect start under glorious sunshine.

Afterwards, I briefly explored the tennis facility right next to the hotel. The Werzers Tennis Arena is certainly one of the most famous tennis facilities in all of Austria. Davis Cup matches have been played here several times. The relegation playoff match between Austria and Pakistan is expected to take place at the tennis arena in Pörtschach in September. In addition, the facility hosts numerous ATP and ITF tournaments for active players and seniors every year. The annual international senior championships, held each summer, are particularly well-known among tennis players.
Tennis has a long tradition here, as the hotel's founder, Anna Werzer, was an enthusiastic and ambitious tennis player who could often be found on the red clay courts next to the hotel well into old age. The first international tennis tournament was held on the grounds as early as 1896. In the 1930s, even Duke Edward of Windsor played on the red clay and was delighted by the proximity of the tennis courts to the hotel.

The tennis center boasts a total of 10 clay courts and a center court with an impressive grandstand. All of this is located right next to the hotel and just a stone's throw from Lake Wörthersee. The facilities are complemented by a 3-court indoor tennis hall, providing an ideal alternative during the winter or in bad weather. Training opportunities are available through external coaches, offering individual lessons and customized tennis camps.
Those who prefer chasing after a smaller rubber ball to a yellow felt one can do so on the two squash courts in the tennis hall. A bright fitness room with modern cardio and strength training equipment perfectly complements the workout program. Otherwise, the hotel offers a wide variety of sporting opportunities year-round. Hiking, cycling, jogging right along the lake, golf courses, and of course, various water sports activities in the summer. A wonderful excursion destination, for example, is the Pyramidenkogel, which can be easily reached on foot from the other side of the lake. The reward is a magnificent panoramic view.

After my tennis and sports activities, I regularly relaxed in the lakeside spa. The sauna and wellness area is located partly in the hotel and partly in the historic bathhouse. For all sauna enthusiasts, this historic sauna area is simply the best. Even though the two saunas are small, the glass-enclosed sauna offers a breathtaking view of the lake. After the sauna, you can cool off directly in the lake – what could be better? As an alternative, there's the outdoor pool, which seems to float directly above the lake. This makes recovery easy.
For those seeking even faster regeneration, the new cryo suite offers a treatment at minus 110 degrees Celsius. Demand for this special treatment is high, so unfortunately I couldn't get a suitable appointment. But on my next visit, this frosty experience will definitely be on my must-do list.
The food is definitely an absolute highlight at the Werzers Hotel Resort Pörtschach. Even in the mornings, I had a hard time choosing in the spacious breakfast area, so large and varied was the selection of muesli, yogurts, rolls, fresh egg dishes, and much more. The culinary experience in the evening, as part of the gourmet half-board, deserves special mention. Every evening, the kitchen team surprised us both visually and gastronomically with a five-course menu of a very high standard. Added to this was the beautiful ambiance of the lakeside restaurant with its huge panoramic windows. Even on cooler days, you felt like you were sitting by the lake.
Unfortunately, my short break at Lake Wörthersee went by far too quickly. There was so much more to discover in the region beyond the tennis courts. But I'll definitely make up for it on my next visit. Because one thing I'm absolutely set to enjoy when the weather is warmer is a sundowner on a balmy summer evening at Anna W., the largest gin bar on Lake Wörthersee. With its breathtaking view of the lake.
