fantastic tennis weekend at the Stanglwirt Tennis Hotel finally arrived . In our Fantastic Advent Calendar 2020, Daniela from Munich won an overnight voucher for the superb 5-star hotel in Going am Wilden Kaiser in Tyrol. The pandemic disrupted her travel plans a few times. But at the beginning of 2022, Daniela and her husband were finally able to redeem their voucher. We were also delighted when Daniela sent us a very honest and detailed Travelscout report. Thank you so much! Read for yourself how Daniela experienced her stay at the Stanglwirt, the tennis training, the training facilities, and everything else!
"Finally, finally we were able to redeem our prize from the 2020 Advent calendar. Of course, I absolutely want to send you a short (long) travel report and thank you again for this fantastic prize. We won an overnight stay for two people at the Stanglwirt in Kitzbühel, including a private tennis lesson. We booked an extra night at our own expense.".
The journey from Munich to Kitzbühel was trouble-free, and the welcome at the Stanglwirt was very warm. Our luggage and welcome drink were taken to our room. What was even better was that we received an upgrade and were thus able to stay in a truly beautiful, very spacious suite with a separate living area, dressing room, and a huge whirlpool tub. The country-house style of the rooms is certainly a matter of taste; I'm not a fan of this style myself, but the room was really lovely, clean, and almost as big as our apartment in Munich.
The first thing we did, of course, was test out the tennis courts. Unfortunately, as expected, the outdoor courts were still closed. But the indoor courts are in excellent condition and, at €28, very reasonably priced.
After that, we went to the spa area. It's nicely designed and perfectly fine. However, I have to say that I've seen much nicer ones, and the relaxation rooms in particular are very cramped and rather noisy. Although there are signs everywhere saying that cell phones are prohibited and that you should be quiet, unfortunately, this isn't really followed, and the staff doesn't intervene.
Approximately half of the saunas are located in the family area and may only be used while wearing swimwear. Personally, I find it rather odd to go into the sauna wearing swimwear, but that's a matter of taste, of course.
We had dinner in the à la carte restaurant. The staff were incredibly friendly, but unfortunately, they seemed a bit overwhelmed by the number of people, which made it somewhat chaotic and hectic. However, I suspect this was due to the pandemic and the likely numerous staff shortages, and things are usually much more organized. The food was good, but also on the pricier side (one soup for €8, a roast pork for €22, and a roast beef with onions for €34).
The absolute highlight was the breakfast buffet the next morning. As you can probably tell from my previous report, we often stay in good wellness hotels, but we've never seen such a fantastic breakfast buffet anywhere else. It simply had everything, and all of the highest quality. Our expectations were truly exceeded.
Afterwards, we went to our private tennis training session ( TennisTraveller : at the Peter Burwash Tennis PBI Academy). We received a very warm welcome. Even my husband's spontaneous decision to join the training was absolutely no problem. The training was fantastic. Our coach gave us some truly valuable tips that I was able to put into practice. I can wholeheartedly recommend the training at the Stanglwirt to everyone; it was great fun and I think it really helped me improve.
My husband played in a ranking tournament the day after we left and won both of his matches – that says it all, doesn't it? ;)
Then it was back to the wellness area, more tennis, and a bit of hiking in the beautiful surroundings.
Since we were very tired in the evening, we cancelled our à la carte meal and ordered room service. I ordered a club sandwich, and my husband was craving pizza. It was incredibly kind of them to accommodate us, even though pizza wasn't on the menu. Unfortunately, we were then a little disappointed by the quality and the rather high price.
After another restful night in our huge bed, we unfortunately had to go home the next morning, feeling very refreshed and relaxed, after enjoying the excellent breakfast buffet once again.
The Stanglwirt is an excellent hotel in a beautiful location. The staff are always courteous and very friendly. Our concerns that it might seem too stiff and "pretentious" proved completely unfounded.
The tennis courts and coaches are first-class. The spa area is nice, but there's room for improvement in a few areas.
We would absolutely love to recommend the Stanglwirt without reservation, but in our opinion, the very high prices for food and drinks are a slight drawback. However, if that doesn't bother you, you can have a wonderful time here.
Best regards, Daniela
