I'm an advanced beginner and don't really know much about strings or string tension. Which string, which type of string, and what average string tension do you recommend? Should one also consider age and gender?
I would recommend a personal consultation to everyone, because the choice of material is as individual as the person themselves.
As a basic rule of thumb: the string tension should be as low as you still have control over your stroke. These days, strings aren't strung as tightly as they used to be anyway. Tensile strengths between 21 and 25 are perfectly normal.
As long as the string doesn't break, you should choose a polyamide string, also called a synthetic string. These offer good support and absorb vibrations well during the stroke. Advanced players who are already breaking strings can switch to a thinner poly string.
But be careful not to use strings with diameters that are too thick or tensions that are too high. The strings don't need to last forever. You should have them restrung at least once a year or season anyway. If you play more often, you should do it more frequently.
